   updated Oct 24 2006.

Howdy and welcome to my small site dealing almost exclusively with my passion and hobby, whisky of all kinds and origins. So far I've got my tasting notes and some pictures, but before long I will have my story on my wonderful visit to Kentucky available here with plenty of photos. If you want to share tasting notes I suggest you visit Peatfreak and download the tasting notes program (or share your notes directly online).

Feel free to contact me. e-mail.

These are the tasting notes of bourbons, ryes, malts, blends & Irish I've had. They are sorted alphabetically, use CTRL + F to search for a specific name or bottle. I have quite a few notes that aren't included here but I'll include them whenever I have time.

I have used a nifty little program to store these notes which you can download (free) at www.peatfreak.com.

Distillery: Ancient Age (Buffalo Trace) Score: 75 Perc: 40
Expression: Ancient Age Kentucky Straight Bourbon Date: march 2004 Occasion:
Bought at: Price: Color: 75
Nose: Maple syrup sweetness, cinnamon.
Palate: A stringent, in-your-face bourbon palate.
Finish: Nutty.
Comments: A young everyday bourbon that, presumably, does it's best when mixed. The 10 Star is much better.

Distillery: Ardbeg Score: 83 Perc: 43
Expression: Douglas McGibbons, Provenance 9 Yrs, autumn '91/summer '00 Date: 22 april 2003 Occasion: any
Bought at: LFW Price: £ 25.90 Color: 0
Nose: Peat-smoke and citrus notes in the background. Deliciously malty.
Palate: Light but oily body. Peat, dry sand and sea-spray.
Finish: Long and quite dry, balanced
Comments: A bit drier than the OB 10 which makes it reminiscent of a young Bowmore.

Distillery: Ardbeg Score: 83 Perc: 46 %
Expression: Murray McDavid 1991, 10 Yrs Date: 25 april 2003, 16:30 Occasion: any
Bought at: LFW Price: £37.20 Color: 0
Nose: Big peat-attack. Citrus, thick malt and billowing salt water
Palate: Peaty and salty, a bit on the thin side in terms of body.
Finish: Long smoky peat-fires. Citrus emerges as it fades.
Comments: Fun stuff! A bit pricey for such a young one though. £ 10 less and you've got the OB 10.

Distillery: Ardbeg Score: 83 Perc: 50
Expression: 27 Yrs, 1975, OMC (03-1975 - 10-2002, 198 bottles, bourbon cask) Date: 21 july, 2003 Occasion: Bedtime
Bought at: LFW Price: £ 85 (or was it 90?) Color: 59
Nose: Restrained peat with a citric sharpness and Granny Smith apple fruitiness. Hints of tar and tobacco. WATER brings a crisp and deeply smoky dryness. Floral notes emerge as do white pepper. The malt is struggling against the wood, to no real avail.
Palate: First very hot and spicy. Peat builds up and never really let go. Lots of oak that masks any underlying cocoa/sweet notes. A curt palate that lacks balance and most of all: depth.
Finish: Very hot & spicy. The peat comes rolling in heavily but is eventually vehemently bulldozed by the wood.
Comments: This broke my heart... The spices are so strong it makes me wonder, is this an old Talisker? The wonderful cocoa sweetness I love in Ardbegs is not here, nor is the depth. A good spicy and hefty malt whisky with character and bite, but not a great Ardbeg. Had I tasted this blind, I probably would not have been able to say it's an Ardbeg.

Distillery: Ardbeg Score: 85 Perc: 40
Expression: G& M (CC), 1991/2003 Date: June, 2003 Occasion: any
Bought at: Price: € 37 Color: 0
Nose: Great nose: The peat is in harmony with the bready toffee-like malt and fresh citrus notes in the background.
Palate: Light-medium body. Wonderful interplay of the aromas suggested by the nose. Not as much power and depth as I'd want from an Ardbeg, though.
Finish: Peaty and sweet.
Comments: I wish this would come at 46 % ABV and not chill-filtered.

Distillery: Ardbeg Score: 85 Perc: 40
Expression: G& M (CC), 1993 Date: July/August, 2005 Occasion: what's your fancy?
Bought at: who cares, I got it Price: € 40
Nose: Pounding Atlantic water on sea-weed covered cliffs. Bowmore-ish in its ozone, dry sand notes. Feint hint of almonds and pine tree bark. Palate: Light-medium body. Dryish. Fresh peas. Then waves of fresh peat woth slightly hot white peppers.
Finish: Peppery with red chili-like flavours.
Comments: A good Islay. Not a great Ardbeg. Ultimately I find it unchallenging. Bring the friggin' strength up, will you, G&M?

Distillery: Ardbeg Score: 88 Perc: 43
Expression: 1975/2000 Date: March/April '04 Occasion:
Bought at: Price: Color: 0
Nose: Lively! Bready, thick malt with (bitter?) almonds (mandelkubbar!). The usual coastal notes with salty liquorice. The sweet note I can't quite make out (green apples?). The peat is way back, almost ethereal.
Palate: Oily. Big and sweet chewy toffee. Spiced malt and almonds in dark chocolate (Anthon Bergh's marzipan bar! :)
Finish: Wish it would last longer...
Comments: First time I tried it I didn't think much of it. Gave it two more tries (without tasting any other malts prior) and it all fell into place. Compared to the 1975/1998 this has a more pronounced bitter note. Lovely and balanced all the same.

Distillery: Ardbeg Score: 88 Perc: 58,9
Expression: Very Yong Ardbeg, 6 Years old, exclusive for the Ardbeg Committee Date: feb '04 Occasion: 24/7
Bought at: Ardbeg Price: £ 25 Color: 5
Nose: Massive! Hefty peat and sea-spray. Iodine and citrus in the background with almonds, subdued pepperiness, toffee, Granny Smith-apples freshness. Not very alcoholic despite the stregth. Flawless balance.
Palate: Incredibly oily body for its age. Massive peat and liqourice, salty and the thick maltiness reveals itself after a few seconds.
Finish: Peat!
Comments: This should be bottled and made as widely available as the TEN!

Distillery: Ardbeg Score: 91 Perc: ~54
Expression: Uigedail Date: 10 January, 2004 Occasion: any
Bought at: whiskywizard.com Price: €52 Color: 0
Nose: NO WATER: BIG and meaty (barbeque), polished oak and a hint of pine, tar, raisin. The cocoa/toffee sweetness of the Ardbeg 10 comes sneaking in as it opens, and is followed by sherry sweetness that adds depth. Very powerful and alcoholic. WITH WATER: Hefty peat smoke and some iodine. Becomes drier. Fresh fruitiness. Hint of iron. Ground pepper. Summer fruits (raspberry) in the background. Wonderful balance. I wouldn't add too much water.
Palate: Big and powerful peat smoke but mellower than the attack of the 10. Deliciously malty and spicy, hint of almonds. Tarry, leathery. Rounded and balanced.
Finish: Smoky and quite long. Satisfying yet leaves you wanting more as it eventually waves in the far distance.
Comments: Wonderful!

Distillery: Ardbeg Score: 92 Perc: 55,3
Expression: Committee Reserve Date: 28 juni 2003 , 10.30 Occasion: any
Bought at: www.ardbeg.com Price: £ 45 Color: 0
Nose: Tar, peat and linseed-oil. With water it becomes warmer and fuller with an aggressive & wonderful smokiness. The tarry and drying-sand-on-rocks notes appear more vividly together with an emerging floral note and freshly ground white peppar. Gorgeous.
Palate: Oily and full. Peppery with peat-smoke and burnt nutty notes. Excellent balance.
Finish: Lively but only medium-length for an Ardbeg. Brilliant all the same.
Comments: On the young side but still a big boy with loads of character. Cask strength, too! Yummie.
Ardbeg 1996
Distillery: Ardbeg Score: 75 Perc: 40
Expression: 1996 Connoiseurs ChoiceDate: Oct '06 Occasion: any
Nose: The peat only whispers. Some citric, briney notes and US coffee (that is, bland coffee!). Very mild and subdued for an Ardbeg. As if it's on a vacation lying on the beach sunning itself with an umbrella-drink!
Palate: Thin texture with the peat slowly adding pace. Some unidentified fruitiness and a slight hint of ground spice.
Finish: Short-lived but very refreshing, peat being the dominant character.
Comments: I hate too call an Ardbeg of any kind bland, but this comes dangerously close. I wish G&M would increase the strength. This is like having the standard Ardbeg 10 and you've accidentally added too much water.

Distillery: Ardbeg Score: 95 Perc: 46
Expression: 10 Yrs Date: 15/3 '03 Occasion: any
Bought at: SB Price: 449 SEK Color: 0
Nose: Powerful peat wonderfully balanced with salty, peppery and cocoa-like sweetness. A sublime Islay nose.
Palate: A smooth and round, multi-layered palate. Big smokiness in harmony with that wonderful Ardbeg sweetness and thick malt.
Finish: Very long and lively. The peat is all over but still lets in sweetness and pepper.
Comments: You can't really ask for much more...

Distillery: Ardbeg Score: 99 Perc: 46
Expression: 1977 Date: 2 april 2003, 21:16 Occasion: any
Bought at: TWS Price: € 112.50 Color: 0
Nose: To die for! - Sweet, bready peat-smoke and delicious toffee. Slightly medicinal and barbeque-ish. Makes me think of old cellars with damp earth floors and a big bonfire in the woods on an autumn day surrounded by big pine trees.
Palate: Very smooth mouth-feel. The distinct peatiness is in perfect harmony with that sexy sweetness and thick, bready maltiness. Perfect balance.
Finish: Enormous! Refuses to leave and plunges me into a trance-like state of mind.

Comments: If Ardbeg 1977 could wear a ring, I'd marry her.
Distillery: Ardbeg Score: 96 Perc: 46
Expression: Lord of the Isles Date: Oct 2006, the bottle being close two 2 years oldOccasion: special occasions
Bought at: Systembolaget Price: SEK 1600/ € 170
Nose: Just two secs after having poured a small glass of this "The ultimate Expression of Ardbeg" I sensed an orangey peatiness in the air. As I buried my nose in the glass, wow! The peat is perfect, not dominant but in perfect harmony with the flavours et al. Earthy and smoky. Sea-salt and damp warehouse earth-floors, slightly dry in the background with faint hins of citris, matshmallows, and an ever weaker note of soap and pine. Is there some 1977 in here? Palate: Smooth and coating yet after 1½ seconds the peat attacks you like a thai-whore weaned on asparagus! The peat, although this is +25 years and should have subdued the peat, it is still dominant but gives way to the many flavours I associate with Ardbeg: half-dry oaky notes, a hint of marzipan, slightly astringents but still somehow smooth; a bit of ground pepper and burning leaves in the background. Lovely.
Finish: Peat, salty, pine, briney and a tough of idodine. Lasts enough for you to sing yourself to bed.
Comments: There's gotta be some '77 in here, otherwise I cannot explain the pine and burning leaves notes. A masterpiece of an Ardbeg. I find one huge flaw in this whisky: my bottle will dry out faster than what I'd like to even consider.
Distillery: Auchentoshan Score: 80 Perc: 40
Expression: 10 Yrs Date: 14 april 2003 Occasion: any
Bought at: SB Price: 365 SEK Color: 0
Nose: Malty toffee with hints of coconuts (?) and a rather prominent citrus character.
Palate: Good maltiness with lots of citrus. Fresh, light and almost sourish. Good stuff.
Finish: Short but refreshing and very pleasant.
Comments: Far from as dull and bland as when I tasted it the first time. Should be judged on its own merit and not, as I inappropriately did the first time, compared to heavier Highlanders.

Distillery: Balvenie (with a twist) Score: 75 Perc: 46
Expression: Burn of Speside/Burnside (99 % Balvenie, 1 % Glenfiddich) 6 Yrs Date: June 2004 Occasion:
Bought at: Price: Color: 10
Nose: Yeast, citrus (lime), hints of almonds; sweet caramel; honeydew melon and a vague "bready" malt scent.
Palate: Very fresh, almost austere, with a fruity feather-light body.
Finish: Short and fresh with a slightly bitter bent on the tail.
Comments: I've long wondered what a your Balvenie tastes like. Now I know. This was great fun and the story behind this bottling is fascinating. Read it here: http://www.celticmalts.com/journal-a33.htm. Thanks, Jeroen!

Nose: Complex. Dry with vanilla, oak and leathery notes. Water brings oak and fruits. Faint honey as it opens.
Palate: Almost rugged for a Balvenie. Big and powerful with vanilla, malt and oak. Slight citrus emerges.
Finish: Faint sweetness with good weight.
Comments: Austere dryness without the big honey notes I love in The Balvenie.

Nose: Rounded and delicate with fruit, spices and leather. Very generous and full in character.
Palate: Immediately spicy. Malt and sweet fruit. Oily and well balanced.
Finish: Fresh malt and slightly bitter on the tail.
Comments: A wonderful Balvenie. Not as heavy and bold as the 21 year old PortWood. A great malt nonetheless.

Nose: Black coffee, dark chocolate, treacle and gorgeous honey notes. Leather, almonds and some fresh oak. Very round and smooth. Lovely.
Palate: Deliciosuly malty with the renowned honey notes and sherry fruitiness.
Finish: Malt, coffe and marsipan.
Comments: A little less of everything when compared to the 12 Yrs DoubleWood but wonderful all the same.

Distillery: Balvenie, The Score: 88 Perc: 43
Expression: 17 Yrs Islay Cask Date: 13 june 2003 Occasion:
Bought at: SB Price: 1000 ? Color: 0
Nose: Sweet and fruity (peaches, pears) at first with the vanilla and honey. As it opens a sooty smokiness emerges, quite subtle yet clearly noticeable.
Palate: Light peat but still not very smoky. The Balvenie characters (sweet, nutty malt and honey) are not masked, rather they've been accompanied by a slight sootiness which is quite attractive.
Finish: Lively.
Comments:

Distillery: Balvenie, The Score: 92 Perc: 40
Expression: 21 Yrs PortWood Date: June 13th 2003 Occasion:
Bought at: SB Price: 1100 Color: 0
Nose: Very aromatic and balanced sherry fruits. Raisins. Hints of water-melon, white pepper. Honey and oak.
Palate: Great depth and balance, again. Quite full-bodied, slightly oily and a great many flavours unfolding.
Finish: Long and lingering. Bassett's wine gums!
Comments: Before trying this I feared it would be too winey. Not so. The port adds extra flavours to the Balvenie character. Sophisticated and balanced.

Distillery: Balvenie, The Score: 93 Perc: 40
Expression: 12 Yrs DoubleWood Date: March 22 2003 Occasion:

Nose: Honey, vanilla, coffee. and "Anton Berg" chocolate (marzipan covered in dark chocolate). Soft and very velvety smoooooooth.
Palate: Medium-body. Oily. Sweet vanilla & honey. Chocolate. Multi-layered.
Finish: Elegantly malty with a hint of peat. The last echo include bitter-sweet almonds.
Comments: "r0b, you pick: an evening with Jennifer Connelly or this free 1 litre bottle of DoubleWood?" I'd be in the Hell of all Hells deciding.

Distillery: Balvenie Score: 97 Perc: 46,9
Expression: 25 Yrs Single Barrel, Cask no. 14603, bottle 111. Distilled 5 Nov 1974. Bottled 2 Oct. 2000 Date: 13 juni 2003 Occasion: after dinner
Bought at: SB Price: 1400 SEK Color: 0
Nose: Delicious, almost chewy, maltiness. Butterscotch and toffee. Granny Smith apples and fruit cocktail. Vanilla wafers. Hazelnuts & marzipan hence the hint of nougat chocolate. Fat & buttery.
Palate: Incredibly oily and a very rich body, creamy and smooth. Mouth-coating. Oak, but never over-powering despite the age. The trademark honey-toffee notes are evident as is the "bready" maltiness. Superb balance.
Finish: Very long and lively. The vanilla & toffee lingers beautifully. At the very end drying, becoming malty.
Comments: The best Balvenie I've had, without a doubt. I adore the toffee, rich malt and the immensly oily body. One of the best Speyside whiskies available, I believe.

Palate: oily, very attractive smokiness. Mellow and melts on the tongue.
Finish: Firey spicy & peaty yet mellow.
Comments: A stunningly smooth blend that, despite the price, is a quality blend and never rushed. I've been tasting this for over a year now and it never lets me down. Incredibly smooth and dangerously drinkable. Like cotton for your throat as far as blends are concerned! ;)

Finish: Salt and smoke.

[UPDATED TASTING NOTE]
Distillery: Black bottle Score: 50 Perc: 40
Expression: standard Date: August 3, 2005 Occasion:
Bought at: billig-sprit.se Price: € 22
Nose: Oh no, for heaven's sake: has my taste changed so much, developed beyond past experiences? I used to say to my friends that the no age statement BB is far better than the 10 Yrs, but nosing this is much too much fabrication, not natural influences. Sure, it still has the sea-influences, the peat and smoke, but it is covered by an even layer of a stuffy toffee note. It doesn't seem to be all Islay to my nose at this point.
Palate: Sweetish malt with quite a good Islay character, but I still get a feeling that on the palate, too, is something that should not be here. Please, please, I beg whoever is in control, let my next purchased bottle of this once super blend be what I remember it to be.
Finish: Salty, peaty and ultimately weird: flavours simply do not taste honestly Islay.
Comments: My heart is in a million peaces.. \m/

Distillery: Bushmill's Black Bush Score: 85 Perc: 40
Expression: Black BushDate: Feb 2006 Occasion: any
Bought at: billig-sprit.se Price: € 30
Nose: Unmistakably Irish: fruity beyond belief and clean barley. Add some spicy oak and it's basically all there. (minor flaw: some toffee that seems out of place).
Palate: Wonderfully oily - it coats the mouth with a fruity onslaught: canned peaches, black berries, cherries, raspberry and even some gooseberry finds its way in.
Finish: Feintly peppery with more fruit.
Comments: Lean, clean and puts me on an Irish whiskey wean! A little more complexity would not hurt, though.

Distillery: Blanton's Score: 93 Perc: 46,5
Expression: Original, Straight Kentucky Bourbon Date: november 2004 Occasion: after dinner
Bought at: billig-sprit.se Price: €35 Color: 79
Nose: A fantastic bourbon nose. Rich and deep with pronounced juicy corn-sweetness, vanilla mint chocolate pralines and faint note of something bitter and almonds. Massive and complex.
Palate: The minty (rye?) note is immediate, followed by an even layer of fresh as well as dried fruits. Exceptional balance and with layers uypon layers of flavours to discover.
Finish: Lasts forever. Oaky notes and enormous sweetness (yet never crosseing the line) and hints of black coffee.
Comments: A perfumed Rambo of a whisky. Truly magnificent in every respect.

Distillery: Jim Beam Score: 70 Perc: 126 proof
Expression: Booker's Small batch bourbon Date: July 6 2005 Occasion: I wonder
Bought at: Talbott Tavern, Kentucky
Nose: Alcoholic. As it opens: vanilla and sweet corn. Leafy. Cinnamon. Rough.
Palate: Oily with a medium body. Fresh barley with sweetness from the corn. No added water when sampling.
Finish: A Cognac-like finish that I don't particularly care for.
Comments: I reckon I need to get back to this and not judge it too harshly, but for now I can safely say this is not to my liking. Furthermore, I have my doubts the palate will benefit from water...?

Distillery: Bowmore Score: 70 Perc: 56

Bought at: Price: €40 Color: 0
Nose: Big floral notes along with peat. Water brings out the ozone-like aromas, burnt rubber, very dry sand and straw.
Palate: A peaty & very dry malt. Too dry for my palate and it's one-dimensional in charachter. Unbalanced.
Finish: Oak and dry peat.
Comments: The flaw is: no balance at all. If you forced me to drink more than a nip of this urinal fluid, you'd get the same problem, punk!

Nose: Dry, earthy peat-smoke. Distinctly floral with a rugged spiciness. Heather and grapes.
Palate: Rather sophisticated and rounded. Peaty albeit not as massive as one may expect. Balances very nicely with the sweetness. Complex
Finish: Initially spicy and sweet, becoming drier and the peat sets in and echoes away.
Comments: A good Bowmore with depth and balance.

Bought at: ? Price: ? Color: 0
Nose: Big and rich with distinct floral and spicy notes. Dry peat, almost heather-like (in that sense it reminds me of Highland Park 18). Burnt toast. Faintly metallic. Balanced.
Palate: Starts sweet, then comes the peat and then a very nice spicy note. The floral note on the nose is here, but perhaps in the the form of a candy-like sweetness. Rounded. Mellow and smooth, yet peaty and powerful.
Finish: Spicy, peaty, sweet. Wunderbar!
Comments: I tried this a couple of years back and loved it. Bought another bottle recently and was a bit sceptic as I've heard rumours about recent bottlings being much, much too floral and unbalanced. Well, not my bottle. Of the Bowmores I've tried (Legend, 12, 15, 17, CS) this is almost, if not equally, as good as the 17 year old. Elegant stuff.

Finish: Lasting earthy and salty notes. Faintly bitter malt and slightly nutty as it fades. (bitter almonds?)
Comments: haven't had this for years. Of the less peaty Islays, I'm not sure if I prefer this over Bruichladdich 10. A great light-weight Islay with a lot of personality.

Nose: A Bill Gates-rich nose that boosts both power and sheer elegance. Sweet natural caramel and toffee, with Aunt Jeninas maple syrup on vanilla ice cream, strands of cinnamon and pistachio nuts. The rye is balancing spot on with the corn: soft and beguiling yet offers that hard fruity input and "polished floors" which makes for a spectacular balance. I can have my nose in a glass of this for days. No signs of overpowering oak whatsoever.
Palate: Not quite as big at first like the nose suggests, still enormous, though. Enters with soft vanilla that coats the mouth with layers of flavours of toffee, toasted almonds, cinnamon and sweet corn, then the rye really starts to kick in - moving towards a sharper, slightly bitter note and subtle ripe fruits. Immaculately balanced. Again: no signs of the whiskey being drowned in oak.
Finish: The rye is still here, but softens step by step and re-joins the sweet corn and leaves a nutty note as it signs off.

Comments: My abode will never hold an EMPTY bottle of this outstanding work of art. For its splendour and unquestionable quality, this could be priced much higher and make no excuses for it.

Expression: Eagle Rare 10 Yrs, Single Barrel Bourbon Date: October 2005
Nose: An immediate statement the minute you bury your nose in the glass: "I'm all about class". The wood influence seem more like sappy birch than oak. The sweetness is part maple syrup on pancakes (juicy and chewy); and the aroma you pick up when walking into a candy store with jars full of fruit-drops in powdered sugar. But wait, there's more: Anthon Berg's chocolate bar (marsipan and dark chocolate) with a vanilla pod buried in the middle.
Palate: Just short of being full-bodied. Smooth, silky, and oily. A bourbon for those of us with a sweet-tooth! Its corn sweetness is not as distinguishing a feature as with many American whiskies. The flavours mingle seamlessly, creating a periliously drinkable spirit. Nougat, marsipan, arrak, custard... I could go on. Sooo sweet and rounded but never within reach of being cloying.
Finish: A different dimension altogether. The more mature, "grown-up" influences appear: Here comes the spice, the slightly sappy oak with a hint of dry leather.
Comments: No, I am not being paid by Buffalo Trace to write favourable reviews (Because too few read them and I'm just a novice drunkard, hah!). But I trust my nose and palate: Buffalo Trace bourbons are in a league of its own. The last four brands of theirs that I have tried have all been nothing short of palatable orgies worthy of any self-respecting Epicurean. World class.

Nose: Waxed bar tables, zesty and "orangey". Needs time to open... (As I wait for it for some time, it reminds me very much of standing on the grounds at Buffalo Trace) Develops a luscious corn/dried fruits (sultanas, plums, figs) sweetness that is in perfect harmony with soft vanilla, powdered sugar and some spices also sneak in from somewhere.
Palate: A very silky, oily and smooth mouthfeel, coats the mouth. When the first little sip is swallowed - BOOM! - an explosion of big big bourbon flavours. This is some rich and generous whiskey. Corn sweetness, fruit freshness and mildly oaky bitterness (added also by the rye, perhaps?)
Finish: For something so solky and oily, the finish is very fresh and envigorating. I seem to notice the rye here a lot more.
Comments: A bourbon I have seen in online shops for several years but never bought until now. Knowing it's a Buffalo Trace bourbon, maybe I was subconsciously saving it as a future treat? Freudian silliness aside, When I get a chance to taste anything of this quality, bearing in mind all the time, knowledge, experience and hard work that's gone into it, I almost feel like falling to the floor, "I'm not worthy!". Had I not already planned to head down to the gym in the morning, I'd fall asleep with this bottle next to me. Waking up finding it half-full!

Comments: I was generously offered a tumbler of this renowned super-bourbon while my girlfriend and I were visiting Buffalo Trace Distillery in Kentucky. A gentleman of the distillery took us to lunch and while waiting four our meals, I was presented with a richly poured glass of this nectar. First of all, this is a high-strength bourbon. I had no idea what to expect but my expectations were sky-high. Both due to the reviews I had read, but perhaps more so because I really adore the whiskies of Buffalo Trace that I have tried, and this was supposedly the best.

I was so thrilled when the glass was put in front of me that I nearly jumped. And that overwhelming feeling of sheer excitement never surpassed because no matter how much I nosed it, all I could detect was a very sharp and edgy fruitiness that usually is a result of the rye in the mash-bill. Not as in-your-face and bitter as with a straight rye, not as softened and sweet as the rye notes in a straight bourbon. I may have appeared indifferent, but in truth my reaction was that of bewildered astonishment. "If you want to add water you won't hurt my feelings", Mr Weber said as I coughed my way through the second tiny, tiny sip. I was confused: I'm usually able to detect at least half a dousin flavours on the first two sniffs, but this was impossible. I would need an entire day to scratch the surface, even. And that I would have wanted. The only correct thing for me to do is to search for a bottle of my own (not an easy task in Sweden and Europe).

On that occassion, either my tastebuds, nose and brain were temporarily slain, or, chances are, complexity had reached an entirely new level of which I was fully blown away by. Either way, this battle I must face again, and although it may be my last - I am looking forward to it.

I'll keep you posted.

It's very difficult to judge this on its own merit because thoughts are drawn to inferior products like grappa and new-make whisk(e)y-spritit sold as something else. At least the label does not completely lie. The predominant flavour whem dipping my nose in this is yeast, fresh yeast. Think Grappa. Tasting it is againg, yeasty but with a toufch of grass. Oh bouy, would someone rinse my glass?
A curious spirit to taste, and may - just may - be informal. But if you want a straight corn whiskey try Mellow Corn. I am not sure if this is meant as a joke, enjoyable to taste, however, it was.

By the way, when I think of how it was to sniff Woodford's Reserve's new make-spirit, it was a lot like this. But WF had a colossolal amount more of softness and balance.

Palate: Full-bodied and creamy. Coats the mouth with layers of honey, oranges and corn sweetness though never becomes cloying perhaps thanks to the oak and refreshing rye sharpness. Beefy and complex!
Finish: Spicy and almost bruising. Almost becomes dry but is saved by delicious notes of oranges and fresh green apples. Long and lively. Makes you reach for the bottle again.
Comments: An outstanding whiskey with a curious balance between big, brusing & butch, and gently fruity with soft vanilla sprinkled on top.

Nose: No balance at all: cloyingly sweet with overwhelming toffee, chocolate and arrak, as well as vanilla. There seems to be no rye-input at all which may reveal my lack of knowledge of this (is it wheated?), and the corn seems not only overripe, but decomposed. For those with a sweet-tooth, even, this is too much.
Palate: Not only oily, but seems fattening beyond usual American whiskies..
Finish: Leaves a daft, overtly sweet feel that stick to the roof of the mouth.
Comments: A colossal disappointment. The balance is like a cross-eyed mental escapee. I bought this on my first ever visit to New York (plus a bottle of their rye, still unopened). It's so sweet it could be a whiskey finished Captain Morgan rum. If my memory serves me well, the Beam's had/have something to do with this, but I can't ever see that this has been distilled by those lads. Off-notes in every respect. I will never buy this again. There are more fruits (raisins, plums) but the first impression of wood, stripped of its bark (with a vague white pepper and orange note behind) on a rainy autumn day prevails. Chewy, clean, fresh and wonderfully playful. There's no peat and as far as I can tell, no discerning sea influence. I'd easily mistake this for a hefty Highlander.
Palate: Smooth and light yet full of personality. The fresh wood detected on the nose is here, accompanied by oranges (tangerines?) with that subdued spicy note.

Palate: A Hiroshima-bomb of flavours. I'm so overwhelmed that it is difficult to fathom the richness of this bourbon (what I now call "The George T. Stagg syndrome/black out! :) I have sipped this for maybe 8 months, and as I sip it several times this session, I still need to go back to my old notes. There is a texture here that is very dense, almost unwilling to tell its tale all the way to the end, hesitating, waiting for a magic word to open it up. You can't get to know this bourbon after only a glass or two...
Some rye sharpness/bitterness in tandem with oak spiciness, and then some goose-berries and the softest of vanilla notes. If I had this kind of harmony in my life I'd be a naturally stoned Buddhist monk with a constant orgasm.
Finish: Oily, still, with rye sharpness in stealth mode. From palate to finish it's incredibly rich and generous, but now a softness is added which gives this super bourbon even more character. A softening finish seems very improbable at this strength, but here it is.
Comments: I have not yet tried my "WT Kentucky Spirit", which as word has it is something extraordinary, but I dare say that this bourbon, together with two of the Buffalo Trace and one Heaven Hill botbon I've had so far, is perfected whisky. The balance is so perfect you'd almost expect a computer would have calculated it.
Every store having stocks of this bourbon, from barrell D-06-15, should put a little note on the shelf:

Please note that the above is merely a selection of god-like bourbons with
high scores. There are many other!

I use the same type of system as Whisky Magazine, very few get below 50.

0-49 - May very well run your car.
50-64 - If you're a religious man or woman, and fear Hell, get used to this because this is all you will drink in the hereafter. Old Nick will raise a glass of this with glee.
65-69 - Lacking complexity and personality and therefore unchallenging. Cocktail fodder at best, or serve your grumpy mother-in-law.
70-74 - Decent whiskey but don't expect the earth to move.
75-80 - Overall a very nice whiskey worth trying, charming and reaching complexity and/or style of its own.
84-89 - Tremendous! Rejuvenating after a hard day's work and something you may keep hidden.
90 - Contemplating suicide? Drink one of these and you're faith in life and mankind will be fully restored.

« Not all whiskies are meant to be sipped
The title says it all. Some brands are best experienced in mouthfuls! I state three whiskies one each from Ireland, Scotland and America as examples.

These are a few of the pictures I took while visiting Kentucky July 5-7 2005. A full story on my visits to Wild Turkey, Buffalo Trace, Maker's Mark, Heaven Hill and Jim Beam's American outpost, will be available here soon.

As most whisky drinkers know, your favourite brands are sometimes hard to pin-point as it has a lot to do with ones mood. I will, however try to make a list of two or three whiskies each from from different categories from Scotland, America and Ireland that I would not live without.

« BOURBON:

• Eagle Rare 17 Yrs
• Wild Turkey Russells' Reserve 10 Yrs
• Elmer T. Lee

« RYE:

• Van Winkle Rye 13 Yrs
• Pikesville Supreme Rye

« IRELAND:

• Powers Gold Label (the standard, not the 12 Yrs)
• Redbreast Pure Pot Still

« SCOTLAND, SINGLE MALTS, island region :

• Ardbeg 10 Yrs
• Ardbeg 1977
• Lagavulin 16

« SCOTLAND, SINGLE MALTS, Speyside :

• The Balvenie 25 Yrs single barrel
• Longmorn 15 Yrs

« SCOTLAND, SINGLE MALTS, Lowlands :

Signatory Rosebank 1991, 13 Yrs, Bourbon casks 4717-18. Bottle 478/632.

« SCOTLAND, SINGLE MALTS, Highlands :

• Dalwhinnie 16 Yrs,
• Clynelish 14 Yrs ("coastal malt")

« SCOTLAND, blended :

• Grant's Family Reserve,
• Black Bottle 10 Yrs

(I do not like admitting it because it make me think of myself as a stuffy, narrow-minded Brittish aristocrat, but blends have become a thorn in my side due to blandness and too much added artificialities. Blended Scotch really has the potential to be THE Scotch with so many talented people in the industry. Then again, a vast majority of Scotch sold is blended but as long as bull's pee like Cluny and the like are given free reign, I say "thanks, bartender, but I'd rather have a glass of equal measures of terpentine and cyanide sprinkled with fresh manure)

« SCOTLAND, vatted (single malts from more than one distillery, blended) :

• The Six Isles,
• I would have stated Johnnie Walker (green, 15 Yrs?), but can't remember it well enough!
(I do not like admitting it, but blends have become a thorn in my side due to blandness and too much added artificialities. They could - and can, occasionally! - be spectacular and perfected, but I have not tasted one in many a moon)

If you are new to whisky, have stumpled on this page, all of the above whiskies are the cream of the crop, super-class whiskies. But there is much more exploring at hand besides the brands mentioned. Just dive in, with an open mind, into the wonderful sea of whisky available. You shall be greatly rewarded. And just might find the Kierkegaardian passion for which "you will live or die".

A dude walks into a bar and says to the bartender:
"I want a 12 years old scotch, and don't try to fool me because I can tell the difference."
The bartender is sceptical and decides to try to trick the man with a 5 year old scotch.
The man takes a sip, scowls and says, Hey - Bartender, this crap is 5 years old scotch. - I told you that I wanted a 12 years old."
The bartender won't give and tries once more this time with a 8 year scotch.
The man takes a sip, grimaces and says : "Bartender, I do not want 8 years old scotch like this filth. Gi'me a 12-years old scotch or ill leave !"
Impressed, the bartender gives him the 12-year scotch on the house, the man takes a sip and sighs, " Ah, now that's the real thing."

A disgusting, ugly, grimy, stinking drunk has been watching all this with great interest. He stumbles over and sets a glass down in front of the man and says:
"Hey, I think that's really far out what you can do. Try this one."...
The man takes a sip and immediately spits out the liquid and cries, "Yechhh! This stuff tastes like piss!"
The drunk's eyes light up and he says, "Yeah sure, now how old am I ?"

A drunk was in front of a judge.
The judge says "You've been brought here for drinking whisky."
The drunk says "Okay, let's get started."
